WL//WH Premiere GRABYOURFACE
Today, February 5th, the brand new album, “Sadgirl Mixtape” LP by the French solo act GRABYOURFACE, is released and contains 10 new tracks (+ one bonus track) from a past that is resurfacing like foam from champagne, and there are compelling reasons for all this. Before I share my story, I want to show you a glimpse of the manifesto by Marie L (grabyourface), as you will find on Bandcamp:
If her earlier releases served as the soundtrack to her life, as she listened to them from behind the barricades of her life, then the new album represents another significant statement – it feels almost like a personal revelation before she reenters the fire again. Until now, he has been presenting electronic, aggressive music, from industrial to techno (occasionally), with a very punk aspect and in an intense ‘no-tomorrow’ style. What follows the wrath? What reemerges like the seeds that nourish the wild sea within the metropolises of Europe?
The sadness and the sigh that accompanies the thought that “someday soon we will die as a society” reflect the way things have unfolded. The “glorious” Generation X (like me and Fabrizio, for example) illustrated a vision of the future that the younger generations have adopted as a guide, and many feel lost in Nations where no one truly fits. These harsh assumptions are central to this new album, which seriously addresses these themes through both the music and Marie L’s lyrics and words, and you know well how deeply a piece of cotton can cut, including an intense (and now probably permanent) feeling of “departure”.
I believe the lyrics inspired the music of the new album, which explains why the overall sound is more aligned with sadcore, featuring significant doses of synthwave harmonies along with targeted outbursts. This album is fairly melodic compared to the previous ones and has a sense of beautiful numbness. It has a travel-like feel, and at times, it can be quite danceable as well, though it feels more like you’re dancing alone.
It is understood that in all of this, the darkwave coexists as a distinctive element that doesn’t go unnoticed, and of course, in this album, there is no thought that anything here happened by chance, quite the opposite, everything happened with a specific purpose and with a specific aesthetic. It is a new album with new-old music that remains in the drawer to appear like the black stray cat on the street on a rainy afternoon in places where nothing is guaranteed. Among the advantages of the “Sadgirl Mixtape” LP is, of course, its immediacy in everything: in the notes, in the words, in the sound, in all.
You can also try “The Black Of My Hoodie”, “I Dream Of A Future Without You”, “Feeling Morbid”, and the hazy cover of “Je Lui Dirai Les Mots Bleus” (initially by Christophe)…or you can enjoy the whole album from start to end. Here we go, press play and listen loud!!!
Keep Up With GRABYOURFACE:
