WL//WH Review: DEATHBED “Machines” EP

WL//WH Review  DEATHBED

Deathbed (Athens GR)

WL//WH likes this act a lot because they only release an album when they find their momentum, and also because all their works have been only in EP format (so far-clever).

Introducing Deathbed (Athens GR), who recently self-released their third, “Machines” EP (Oct. 31), comprising 3 new songs, following their last peculiar release, “Alabastrine” (2019), which received good attention and the required airplay by the dedicated radio stations. Deathbed is an electronic duo that blends darkwave music with synthpop and occasionally incorporates EBM elements; They are, Ion Solounias (Ion Vader) and Aggelos Mastrantonis (Spooky RedRum), featuring Nefeli Stam on backing vocals.

If the “Alabastrine” EP, with its splendid cover, represents the music they sought to explore and illuminate their footprints in the dark, theatrical forest, then the new “Machines” EP signifies a departure from the dust they gathered during that earlier journey, as they rev up their engines to capture and convey the essence of this incredibly dark and menacing world we all inhabit. In this new context, everything is much more measured and specific, as the musical motorik landscape they have created leaves little room for more relaxed ‘conversations’.

Of course, the “Machines” are overflowing with musicality and pleasant melodies, but things are now stricter and more intense than in the past. Also, the tracklist enhances the listening experience by effectively building up to the EP’s climax. Overall, it’s delightful to see Deathbed‘s return with a new work that relates somewhat to their previous one. The new tracks are excellent and feature a noticeably better and fresher sound. I just hope we don’t see them again 5 years from now because they are a very valuable act.

So, here is the “Machines” EP, press play and listen loud (and show them your love)!!!

Keep up with Deathbed:
