London / Leeds, UK-based four-piece Cloud Studies returns with their first cover version, a reimagining of “Last Night I Fell Again” by 90s shoegaze pioneers Moose, via Happy Robots Records.
Formed in 2024, the group, made up of Adam Cresswell (vocals, bass), Kirstin Isolde Lavender (vocals), Martin J Langthorne (guitars), and Adrian Taylor (guitars), have earned attention for their widescreen approach to Dream-Pop and Shoegaze, blending lush guitars, introspective lyricism, and textural experimentation across their acclaimed early singles “Ghosts”, “Cloud Cartography“, and “Dreams About”.
Recorded between London and Leeds, the track captures the band at their most confident and cohesive to date, unafraid to reinterpret a cult classic while asserting their own identity.
Harking back to the early ’90s, pre-Internet era, when we used, especially us outside the UK, to buy records without much info, based on ephemeral listening, and almost without having a clear idea of the genre they played, Moose were among the first groups to blend soft and noisy melodies with both haunting and imaginative pop flair. Their unique multifaceted sonic nuances will endure in a cult undercurrent throughout the impending sweeping Britpop euphoria, together with Revolver and Blind Mr. Jones, to name a few, to finally get the well deserved recognition.
A soul-stirring bittersweet nostalgia emerges through billowing layers of ghostly, tinny strums woven with spidery, ringing mist-laden reverberations, carried by driving drum patterns and supple, lively bass pulses. Kirstin Isolde Lavender‘s earnest, uplifting vocal delivery infuses magnetic threads of enveloping warmth and vulnerability, to gradually vanish into surrounding sidereal soars of squealing and radiating blurry wistful melodies, soothing the spirit and feeding the imagination as much as the original.
This recording was commissioned by the Afterglow Echoplex shoegaze podcast in Portland, Oregon, USA and is to be featured amongst a series of tributes to classic songs from the original shoegaze era.
Cloud Studies‘ cover version of the Moose classic, “Last Night I Fell Again”, is due tomorrow, November 28th, via Happy Robots Records.
