Initially born as the bedroom project of Philadelphia-based musician & composer Matt Whiteford, along with an ever-changing cast of members and collaborators, Cigarettes for Breakfast evolved into a full band known for their lush soundscapes and raw, emotive, fuzzed-out performances, capturing the essence of Shoegaze and Dream pop greats.

After the acclaimed debut studio album “Join the Circus” in 2023, Matt Whiteford went back to his origins writing, recording, and mixing last February’s sophomore LP, “Slow Motion”, all on his own, to take a more personal, vulnerable, and inward approach to the songwriting while further expanding upon his modern take of the “classic” shoegaze and dream pop sounds.

The group builds anticipation for a UK Tour with their first fully acoustic track, “Swallowed Alive”, although it still features the signature reverse reverbs, swirling around and breathing throughout the song, giving it that classic shoegaze sound a la My Bloody Valentine, returning to show their softer side after the latest heavy-hitter full-length, “Slow Motion”.

Have you ever felt stuck and helpless like a worm hanging on the hook of a fishing rod, unable to change the outcome of your misfortune? Cast out and swallowed alive?

Swallowed Alive” is a soul-stirring, haunting and abrasively vibrant acoustic number built on layers of harsh, grating guitar riffs that obsessively scrape, echo, and whirl around soft, fragile, heartbroken male vocals, feeling helpless and unable to move forward inside the belly of the beast.

The song was written, performed, recorded, and mixed by Cigarettes for Breakfast’s founder, Matt Whiteford, at The Hatch Studio in Philadelphia, PA.

Cigarettes for Breakfast‘s first UK show will be on December 4th in Ramsgate at the Ramsgate Music Hall.

Keep up with the Cigarettes for Breakfast:
