WL//WH Premiere: ASSASSUN Offers No Comfort, Only A Mirror in “The Sons of the United Plagues”

WL//WH Premiere  ASSASSUN

Assassun, the off-kilter Synth-Punk project of the multifaceted Berlin-based musician and songwriter Alexander Leonard Donat (Vlimmer, Fir Cone Children, Feverdreamt), is going to release tomorrow, August 15th, the double A-single “The Sons of the United Plagues” b/w “Past/I N B E T W E E N/Future”, in anticipation of the upcoming fourth full-length album, “Retrofate”, due August 29th, via his DIY label Blackjack Illuminist Records. , whose opening track WL//WH is pleased to premiere.

“The Sons of the United Plagues” lands somewhere between industrial post-punk, darkwave, and experimental electronic — calling to mind the intensity of Nine Inch Nails, the bleak atmospherics of Coil, and the rhythmic urgency of Front Line Assembly, with flashes of Laibach’s political bite and The Young Gods’ sample-driven ferocity.

Lyrically, ASSASSUN turns a sardonic eye toward a regressive political climate — specifically the backward slide of the United States following Donald Trump’s 2024/2025 return to power — where diversity is suppressed, climate targets are abandoned, and history’s lessons are ignored. The song’s imagery is vivid, biting, and darkly humorous, offering no comfort, only a mirror.

“Sons of the United Plague” is a searing, unflinching commentary on humanity’s cyclical self-destruction, where climate collapse, autocracy, and ego-driven chaos meet in an unsettling dance, causing a soft buzzy reverb-laden glaze to hover over a strategically skewed and cracking battle ground of tightly pounding drum kicks fused with rusty and gritty textures, along with expansive menacing synth glows, to shake and fuel angry, distorted spoken words, wrought by tension, fear, and pain, with an encompassment of shadowy and ethereal doomy laments.

Assassun‘s digital double A-single “The Sons of the United Plagues” b/w “Past/I N B E T W E E N/Future” will be released tomorrow, August 15th, whilst the upcoming 4th studio album, “Retrofate”, is scheduled for August 29th, both via Blackjack Illuminist Records.
