WL//WH New Music: RUIN RUIN “Funny Motifs” (Music Video)

WL//WH New Music  Ruin Ruin

New Wave of the 21st century, Leipzig-based solo project Ruin Ruin combines the lightness of pop with the anger of punk to examine the absurdity of our human condition and the experimentalism of the computer age.

“Funny Motifs”, accompanied by a DIY video, is the latest and fifth of a series of singles that will lead to the full-length album release on the 20th of June.

An upbeat New Wave hit with grim, ironic, but ultimately compassionate lyrics. The psychological dread of overworking is the centering theme, and dark synth stabs and ice-cold metal samples simulate each step getting heavier the closer we get to our workplaces. The chorus, however, contrasts this horror by ironically centering on a small and futile act of rebellion:

“A waste of time in this time of waste, I give more than I got — but underneath this corporate suit, I’ve got funny motifs on my socks!”

Sung over a groovy bassline, the song conveys both a sense of pain and release. It ends on a high note with a playful solo reminiscent of Talking Heads.

With his new single, Ruin Ruin hopes to reach everyone going through a tough time at work, offering them a moment to vent, dance, cry, and – at best – the soundtrack to quit their shitty jobs.

The paired music video, edited by the artist himself from the (now public domain) 1927 silent movie “The Crowd”, draws connections to historical versions of hustle culture, telling the story of an unsuccessful attempt to live the American Dream. Yet the music video deviates from the original plot and even has a small happy ending in store for us.

Ruin Ruin‘s new single, “Funny Motifs,” is part of the EP “Thoughts & Prayers To The Invisible Hand,” to be released on the 20th of June.
