WL//WH New Music: FRAN CARLYON “Sometimes (they just fall out of the sky) / Running On Emptiness”

 WL//WH New Music  FRAN CARLYON

Active since 2023, Fran Carlyon is a home-recorded lo-fi ‘folk for ages’ solo music project from Southend-on-Sea, England, who has just dropped “two moments captured across counties, transcending dividing lines in pursuit of some kind of peace.”

The opening brief instrumental, “Sometimes (they fall out of the sky),” written on a wave of giddy optimism late last year, laces cosmic-tinged sprawling keyboard modulations with the stirring reiterations of bright harmonic fingerpicking guitar textures, to shape a serene skylit path suffused with an idyllic reflective charm, that seems to deftly hover beyond the clouds.

Written in a difficult moment, “Running On Emptiness” stirs up lilting, hypnotic guitar strums, pulling a fragile, melancholic elegy with coiling, forlorn keyboard quivers, while tired, downtrodden vocals, streaked with glimmers of hope, yearn to give kindness and empathy to others in need.

Two bittersweet contemplative sketches of soft uneasiness and heartwarming intimacy.
