WL//WH New Music CATHEDRALE
Cathedrale, the French Garage / Post Punk unit, made of Jules Maison (vocals and guitar), Felix Wilson (bass), Robin Titube (guitar), and Maxime Costa (drums), tease the release of their fifth studio album “Poison,” due out on February 14, 2025, via Howlin Banana Records and assoregarts, with a video directed by Dan Rubio for the first single “The Setting Sun.”
The Toulouse-based band transposes the dark and mesmerizing timelessness of Baudelaire’s poem “Poison from Les Fleurs du Mal,” into their visceral and hypnotic modern Post-punk specimen, to instill the heavy and immersive atmosphere of addiction, temptation, and ruin inherent in the ‘Poète Maudit’’s own words.
Both nostalgic and melancholic, the emotional-ridden single meanders through off-tempo punchy drum beats and throbbing bass lines, to underpin choppy, disconnected waves of dire icy distorted guitar melodies and wiry piercing wails, while angsty, pain-filled vocals turn to numb gloom under a cloudy sky at sunset.
The Official Video by Dan Rubio places a black-clad Cathedrale, performing “The Setting Sun”, against a ruthless stark white backdrop while layers of strategic distortion disintegrate the foursome into unrecognizable ghostly characters.
