WL//WH New Music BLUE ZERO
An extremely dynamic and eclectic fixture of the Bay Area underground rock scene through the post-punkers Marbled Eye, the shoegazers Aluminum and his darker synthy solo endeavour Public Interest, Oakland-based multi-instrumentalist and songwriter of Filipino origin, Chris Natividad, returns with a new project, Blue Zero, originally imagined in sparse studio demos, and now evolved into a full live band featuring renowned musicians Lauren Melton of SUCKER and Rick Altieri of Blue Ocean.
The forthcoming 9-track debut album “Colder Shade Blue”, to be released on October 11, 2024 via Lower Grand Tapes, harmoniously toes the line of warm and meditative Art Rock and fuzzy, damaged Grunge a là Lily’s, Sonic Youth, and My Bloody Valentine.
The first excerpt “Broken by a Glance” is accompanied by an Official Video, directed and edited by Lauren Melton herself with the videographer Chichi Castillo, showcasing all the bandmates.
Reminiscent of the less loud and harsh yet catchiest Sonic Youth of “Rather Ripped”, a record of which Chris is a big fan, wrapped in hazy shoegazing breezes, “Broken by a Glance” is a cathartic dizzy release of shimmery tinny strummed riffs laced with rippling weeping melodies that sway over a chugging bed of stumbling drum beats and pulsing bass lines, whilst laid-back dreamy vocals, ecstatically fall into rising tides of immersive distorted introspection.
The Video Clip, directed and edited by Lauren R Melton, begins on a sunny day in California when Blue Zero ride bikes through the city to put up flyers for a show later that night. After the sun goes down, a live performance of “Broken by a Glance” shuffles with symbolic imagery as a string of lights frame the casual Gothic trio with a warm red glow. A thread of humour weaves curiosity and smiles through the vision, to sync with the elated vibes of the soundtrack.
