WL//WH New Music: BLANKENBERGE “New Rules” single [Automatic Music]

WL//WH New Music   BLANKENBERGE

Started in 2015, Saint Petersburg-based shoegaze/dream pop band Blankenberge consists of Yana Guselnikova (vocals), Daniil Levshin (guitar, synth), Dmitriy Marakov (bass) and Sergey Vorontsov (drums), returns with the new single “New Rules”, the first glimpse from the upcoming album to be released during the first half of 2025 via the Netherlands-based record label Automatic Music run by Antonio Zelada (Resplandor).

The Russian quartet entrances the listener into a metaphysical ambience built on dreamy, often melancholic, vast and all-encompassing aural soundscapes, teetering between Shoegaze, Dream Pop, and Post Rock.

Combining urgently metronomic krautrock style rhythmic patterns, and an absolutely infectious round and melodic bass,  the new single mirrors perfectly Blankenberge‘s cinematic atmospheric quality, combined with a deep sense of space, as if at the same time it opens and expands, gradually increasing with the addition of swirling distortion and liberating energy.

“New Rules” deals with an old friend who sets new boundaries, causing insecure feelings of fear and alienation.

Seamlessly awash in fluid and lately shivering synth washes, perpetual motorik beats dully pound onwards, alongside moody murmuring bass pulses, dotted by wistful tinkly keyboard drops, and swept by winding vibrant bursts of fuzzed-out guitar riffs, to float and sway over unknown strained expanses in unison with sadly anxious vocals, falling beneath a surge of frenzied sizzling emotions.
