Although a genre that we have listened to in every possible way since we were teens, the elegant, dark, dreamy and highly danceable brand of Synthpop delivered by Paris, France-based artist Matthieu Roche under his Fragrance. moniker is seamlessly able to thrill and rouse us.
The first single since the 2021 second album, “Salt Water”, “Hanté de moi” explores feelings of angst and dread through a lens of psychic intimacy.
As to celebrate Fragrance.‘s premiere in his own French language, the song channels Jacno-tinged bouncy tinkling vibes along with a trancey twist, infusing cold, magnetic and alluring moods, to give rise to oscillating bass pulses, steady marching mesmeric beats, and wistful piles of brittle icy bright keys, around bewitching sensual vocals, unveiling forbidden confessions under a translucent veil of dreamy protection.
Steamy cinematic visuals, directed and edited by Jennifer Medina, star Marissa Sylvester and Matthieu Roche himself as a pair of star-crossed lovers, in sync with the ghostly romantic essence of the soundtrack. Dim, glowing black-light auras enshroud a dancing beauty in surreal mystery whilst keen editing and vulnerable performance clips create suggestions of a secret serenade at the fear of rejection.
