WL//WH Premiere ELLiS·D
ELLiS·D (repeat name three times quickly for full effect) is a songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and performer from Brighton, England, best known as the manic drummer from Strange Cases and more recently Jealous Nostril (alongside Johnny Borell of Razorlight and Jack Flanagan of Mystery Jets).
The British artist began his one-man show in 2021, leaping viciously between Psychedelic Jangle, Disco-infused Kraut Rock and taut Post-punk attack, while, lyric-wise, driving at the heart of today’s doom-laden culture on the brink of a nervous breakdown.
After signing with DIY label Crafting Room Recordings, the energy found in ELLiS·D’s live shows was replicated in the studio with an abundance of releases in 2022 notching up two EPs and four singles in the space of 12 months, along with sell-out shows at The Shacklewell Arms and Dream Bags Jaguar Shoes as part of a first UK headline tour.
WL//WH is very pleased to Premiere Ellis·D‘s DIY Music Video for the brand new single “Straitjacket Blues”, a Disco-infused Psych-Punk number, due out on 10th February, via Crafting Room Recordings, as a perfect way to kick off his incoming UK headline tour between 8th-21st February.
Thought-provoking lyrics set the stage for this sociological dive by using the overwhelming feeling of being bound in a straitjacket as a metaphor for society’s overreaching restrictions on speech, expression, and logic.
“Straitjacket Blues” delivers from its get-go a paradoxical reverie stirred by the high energy of busy drum beats, to trigger a vivid vibrant concoction of sinuously bouncy bass lines, obsessive and wiry jagged funky guitar riffs, laced with distorted abrasive leads, and sparkling jangly melodies, along with flamboyant off-kilter vocal histrionics, channeling David Byrne’s hectic vibes, to stir the angsty modern soul with groovy nostalgia-releasing, head-bobbing moods.
The imaginative DIY visuals add further depth by blending paranoid eye movements with engaging, candid dance sequences to capture the outlandish nuances of the soundtrack. Evocative wardrobe and handcrafted masks draw the viewer’s attention to the tongue-in-cheek vibes of Ellis·D, whilst syncing seamlessly with dance-inducing flows.
