WL//WH Track Of The Day: FIGURE SECTION “Disfigured Section”

Following the highly promising debut single “Teutonic Knights” early in the year, Brussels-based electro/coldwave duo FIGURE SECTION, made of Austrian-born musician and actress Olivia Carrère and Belgian industrial/techno musician Yannick Franck (Raum, Orphan Swords), are back with the 3-tracker EP “Spectre” via Berlin’s imprint aufnahme + wiedergabe.

The pair deftly mixes echoes of 80s past into a vessel of existential woes and insane passions, to create, through menacing electronics, cold danceable rhythms, dangerously lush melodies, a distinctive yet familiar noir-ish icy synth sound.

Between the dark, lush and elusive achingly cold charm of the opening title-track and the stuttering EBM-tinged broken beats of “Slick”, I’m fully intrigued by the chilling, alienated and obscure “Disfigured Section”.

Metronomic lashing snares, interspersed by cracking hi-hats, cut through the eerie mist of ominously pulsing and chugging, sparsely sputtering, bassline relentlessly simmers deep tension and distress with the collusion of glacial paranoid spiraling synth loops over harrowed, emotional charged pleads, mimicked by harsh malevolent growls, suffer anxiously in certain demise.

An overall sheer icy cold delight.

Keep up with Figure Section:
