WL//WH Track Of The Day: INVADERBAND “Handcuffed Man Shoots Himself”

Track Of The Day  INVADERBAND

Invaderband is the art-rock music project put together by Derry-based Mancunian artist Adam Leonard, backed by fellow Northern Irish musicians Chris McConaghy (aka Our Krypton Son) on guitar, Gavin McCartney on Bass and Tom Doherty on Drums, who have just dropped the second single, “Handcuffed Man Shoots Himself” from Invaderband’s forthcoming second album, “Peter Gabriel”, the follow up to the acclaimed 2017 Self-Titled debut.

The band delivers another healthy dose of just over two minutes of urgent and gripping punk-pop meets dystopic post-punk anger it’s made a name for.

Already compared to The Stranglers and Buzzcocks, Invaderband‘s scratching, noisy and turbulent but, at the same time, fresh, enthralling and melodic sound and scathing poetry, with refrains that stick in your head like an earworm, harking back to the influential Stiff Records sonic legacy at the intersection between the vibrancy of the driving ‘four chords’ of the Adverts and The Damned and the stingy sarcastic story-telling of Ian Dury and Graham Parker.

Properly described as “a strain of garage-leaning art-rock that embraces idiosyncrasy and eccentricity, à la Supergrass, Super Furry Animals, or Modern Life Is Rubbish-era Blur”, “Handcuffed Man Shoots Himself”‘s raw lyrics expose the utter feelings of worthlessness, fatigue, and desperation experienced at the hands of police brutality and the corrupt, ruthless system that constructs and perpetuates such atrocities.

Fueled by relentless punchy drum beats, initially restless pin-point burbling bass throbs wriggle their way in and out, through energetic sharp guitar riffs and piercing emotional melodies, swept by both fizzing and hissing, reedy synth swathes, swirling around alienated, expressive male vocals releasing heartfelt anger and unrest through caustic shouts and frustrated, nervous hums, to drown helplessly into the tainted tides of injustice.

At once familiar yet genuinely modern, Invaderband gifts us authentic soul-stirring emotions, pretty rare in an increasingly alienating and disconnected society.

Keep up with INVADERBAND:
