WL//WH Interview NO FLOOR
No Floor is a gloomy gazey four-piece from Western Washington. The band focuses on creating harsh and lush walls of guitar noise with special attention to structure, leaning toward a vision of “droning through repetition.” Reserved vocal melodies float over crushing and womby moments. No Floor was a big hit last year at Tremolo and is eager to replicate it with a killer show on Friday, December 13.
Thanks so much for the interview. Let’s trace the band’s roots and story.
The three of us dudes (Tim, Mike, Erick) grew up in Kitsap and have known each other since around high school. We’ve started and stopped a few projects over the years, kinda casually sharing songs. Mike was playing in this doom band and we used their practice space to try some stuff out a few years ago, and decided to push it. Sheila was a more recent friend and a known good-bassist, so we invited her to play with us and it stuck.
What are your main influences and inspirations?
Tons of stuff is inspiring of course, but off the top, one band each:
– Sheila – Cocteau Twins
– Tim – Hum
– Erick – Title Fight
– Mike – Have a Nice Life
How would you describe your sound?
We’re noisy and layered. We lean into dissonance and repetition, and I guess that lends itself to a kinda big queasy wall of sound. People have used the adjectives “crushing” and “womby” to describe us and I like to think that’s true.
What does the word ‘shoegaze’ means to you
That journalist who covered a bunch of the early UK bands called shoegaze “the scene that celebrates itself.” Whatever shoegaze means, it’s cool to be around other artists, promoters and venues that care enough to celebrate their scene.
Tell us a little about your recording process and how you create your songs.
So far we’re fully self-recorded. For songwriting, usually one of us will bring an idea, or the bones of an idea, and we try to flesh it out together. We like to take a part and play it until it gets disorienting and build on that feeling.
Which song(s) are you most proud of and best represent the band?
“Forgetting” from our recent EP seems like the song we’re most proud of collectively right now. We have a few newer songs we’ll be debuting here that have the potential to be our new favorites though.
What kind of old/new music are you listening to? Any current bands/artists that you are excited about at the moment?
In the area, we’re digging Fell Off, Prim, Thin Veil and Sheila’s other band Pseudo Saint. In the wider world Punchlove, and Dottie’s new albums have been getting a lot of play lately. Julie, Diiv and Trauma Ray’s albums from this year have been absolute rippers.
Who would you most like to collaborate with?
Will Yip, Phil Odom and Corey Coffman.
What has been your best/worst gig so far (both as a performer and spectator)?
This one place (usually a wedding venue) was really set on making a bunch of noisy ass bands play at conversational volumes, and that just sucked. Trying to get a bunch of effects and big amps to sound good while being quiet just hurts. Besides that, all our shows have been fun and/or funny.
What are your expectations for the upcoming Tremolo Festival, and what should the audience expect from your performance?
Last year we joined the fest at last minute to cover a band that got covid, and it was a blast. People were really nice to us. Hopefully, we’re better than last year. Lightgazr’s projections are gonna be bananas.
What are your plans for the future?
We have a ton of material, so we’re hoping to do a studio album and a short tour next year. We’ve been flirting with Waves Crashing about going to California together so fingers crossed.
Any parting words?
