PICKS OF THE WEEK:
  • Swiss/US indie-pop/shoegaze/dream pop duo The Churchhill Garden “Reality“ new single.

The duo has announced something “toe-tapping” different from their typical atmospheric dream pop, and the new single keeps their promises by delving into sparkling mid-80s indie-pop / C86 territories dear to the bands with an irresistibly glossy and poppy edge as The Primitives and Darling Buds, the off-tempo rhythms become more punchy, the guitars more energetic, but nevertheless clear and elegant, the silky yet hearty bassline sneaking all over, while the soft sweet windy Krissy’s voice falls anxious and high, amid a whirlwind of mystical breezes and introspective longing, left transforming fantasy into a love-fueled “Reality.” Mission accomplished!

  • Swedish experimental ethereal jazzy, psych, dream-pop trio from Malmö, Hey Elbow ‘Don’t Speak’ (No Doubt Cover) on Adrian Recordings
The Swedish collective interiorizes and reinvents the No Doubt classic, through a dizzying and unpredictable instrumental frame, moulding it to a riveting, subtly poignant, choral pop reverie.
A different rhythm and tempo weave heavy emotional moods, hypnotized by a relentless polyphonic cascade of bewitching layered harmonies, into resonant buzzing bassline vibrations seeping over trippy tribal off-tempo beats and dazzling, sweeping synth line alarm, luring you back into the stinging lyrical evisceration of love, heartache, and shattered friendship with the same intense agony and stripped-down vocal vulnerability aroused in the original anthemic breakup ballad yet somehow more haunted, with its lingering spectre like echoes, frozen in time.
  • Shaoxing, China dream pop/shoegaze trio City Flanker “500 Days of Summer” new single

The Chinese trio leaves aside the retro synthwave leanings of, otherwise brilliant, last April’s album, to return to reverb-infused hazy chilled-out atmospheres, pervaded by nostalgic ethereal moods, on which glistening guitar strings linger with slightly prickling abrasion, amid dark pulsing bassline and muted slow beats, while lost desperate vocals float helplessly musing dread and remorse over wasted youth.
