Track Of The Day The Visceral Pleasure
Although only formed in 2018, London-based art-rock duo The Visceral Pleasure already drew my attention with a couple of intriguing singles and an effective cover of “Push The Sky Away” from the The Blog That Celebrates Itself Records‘ “Death is not the end… A Tribute to Nick Cave” compilation.
Though clearly influenced from the post-punk, new wave of the 80s and the shoegaze of 90s, especially labels like early 4AD, and Creation Records and bands like Swans, Cindy Talks, Coil, My Bloody Valentine, the pair deftly stirs all these classic sonic elements into a richly immersive, cold, moody and minimal, darkly poignant sound made somehow of ‘guitars and various machines’ enriched by a magnetic female voice.
And are precisely This Mortal Coil and slightly The Jesus and Mary Chain hints that linger underneath the new single “Is Now Mine”.
Repetitive taut snares lashing along on a propulsive hypnotic pulse, underlined by droning deep synth, cut through by subtle urgent icy sharp guitar riffs, exuding a shadowy yet enticing pervading haze of claustrophobia and distress, shaped by anxious, defiant vocals of dark, penetrating and elusive charm, while blanketing reverb-laden bleak ethereal guitar layers, infused by a dangerous edge, surge and whine helplessly into a gripping and harrowing emotionally-charged coda.
A truly ‘visceral pleasure’, let’s hope it’s the first of many.
Keep up with The Visceral Pleasure:
