WL//WH Track Of The Day: SPORTS DREAMS “Drive”

Track Of The Day Sports Dreams

The North Pacific island keeps on nurturing new talents not only tied to the infamous ‘Dunedin sound’, mostly linked by a genuine, often reticent, DIY attitude of independence, originality and unchained creativity.

From Palmerston North, and namely its suburb Te Papaioea, in the North Island of New Zealand, originate the quite freshly formed elusive duo Sports Dreams with a densely atmospheric and stunningly somber hazy sound that existed somewhere between dream pop, shoegaze, emo-pop (in the sense of emotive) and ambient music.

“Drive” is the band’s second single, following the slightly more rhythmic, The Sundays-like jangly homonymous “Sports Dreams”, from the forthcoming debut 5-track S/T EP due out on October 18, 2019 via independent label/collective Papaiti Records

An absolutely sublime and gripping, melancholy-soaked, introspective dreamy tune made of brittle guitar melodies and hypnotic shuffling percussive pace coaxing subtle, darkly inexorable threads of sadness and longing crossed by frozen hissing synth swells building in sheer aching intensity and blinding depth sharpened by powerful and dramatic vocals that sway and drift through layers of heartfelt pain, betrayal, and fear as they are lost, alone, and forgotten in gloomy disheartening isolation and distrust.
